So I never do this and this will probably be a one time thing, but here is my review of Chris Nolan’s film “Inception”
Summary
Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), our main character, is a professional extractor. He breaks into other men’s minds through their dreams to steal their most guarded secrets. After a failed attempt, he is requested for a different form of the job. Instead of stealing another man’s secrets or idea, he is asked to put an idea into someone’s head so well that they believe that it is truly their own; thus being called Inception. Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) believes that Inception is impossible, but Cobb knows otherwise. Their target is a man known as Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphey). They are supposed to make him choose to break up his father’s empire. Cobb sets off to find a new architect, and comes across a college student known as Ariadne (Ellen Page). The team goes through layer after layer of dreaming in order to make the idea stick, fighting enemies every step of the way.
Plot
Inception’s plot is hard to follow for some people, but the problem is quickly resolved in the last 30 minutes of the movie. The plot has a sense of “What’s going on..?” during many parts of the film. It has enough mystery to confuse you at times, yet still keep you interested to want more. Nolan takes a leap of faith that you will trust that although you may be confused now, your questions will be answered in the end.
The plot increases throughout the film at a steady rate, yet at times gives quick “bursts” of suspense to keep you guessing. From questions about his wife, to questions about wether inception will work, the plot is extremely well written to exceed most people’s expectations.
Character Execution
Each actor in the film finely portrays their character beyond a way that can be written in words. The acting is definitely more than believable; it just feels real. Each character is unique in their own way like each piece in a jigsaw puzzle, all fitting together perfectly. There’s both humor and emotion displayed throughout the character line-up. The actors could not have been chosen any better. Not only do you believe the character’s, you feel what they do.
Special Effects
The movie delivers top of the notch special effects that make worlds bend, towers crumble, streets explode, and much much more. There’s not much left to be said about the special effects except that they were tuned to perfection.
Musical Soundtrack
The music is composed by Hans Zimmer, who has done many other feature films including another of Chris Nolan’s movies, “The Dark Knight”.
The music throughout the movie is the best I’ve ever heard. Although the music is completely instrumental, It delivers the feeling and emotion necessary for each and every seen in a neatly wrapped package that is unmistakably astounding.
Length
With a total running time of 2 hours and 23 minutes, Inception is not too short and not too long. It’s a perfect time for this type of movie. If it were any shorter, the movie’s ability to deliver to its audience would have been compromised. If the movie had been any longer, it probably would have turned out to be another “Dark Knight”, where its viewers are just waiting for the ending to come. Inception leaves you deep into the movie, unconcerned about the time.
Rating
After I watched the movie opening night, I knew right away it would be in my top 10. When I watched it again a few months later, I realized it was the best movie I’ve ever seen for the reasons stated above. From the amazing soundtrack (which I bought as soon as possible), to the range of talented actors, I knew that this was a movie to remember. It is said that Nolan spent ten years writing and revising this movie before it went into production, and I say it payed off big time. This movie truly deserves my first, 10/10
